As shown in the first 2 X-men movies, they briefly mentioned about Logan's past. It is assumed in this movie that we will learn more about his secret history before the Weapon X project. For those who are not familiar with the Weapon X program, it is actually a government project conducted by the Canadian government. Captured mutants are mostly used in the experiment to enhance their super abilities and also mutate humans. The Weapon X project has produced familiar characters such as Wolverine, Deadpool, Sabretooth and so on.
In the movie, Wolverine seeks revenge for the death of his girlfriend against Sabretooth also known as Victor Creed before he went through the Weapon X program. So it is no surprise to see Sabretooth being cast as one of the main villains in this Wolverine movie. It is also said that William Stryker from the X-men 2 movie will also be cast as the other main villain, if you recall he was the one in charge of the Weapon X program.
